about

Have you ever hit a string of red lights when you’ve got somewhere to be? There’s a moment of surrender, praying for just one green light to break the monotony of consistent road blocks. It’s an analogy for life that can seem all too familiar for most of us. And yet the song “Green Light” points to a realization that many of those perceived barriers must be overcome in our own minds. Admittedly, when I wrote "Green Light” with Winnipeg producer Jonny Kirouac, I was pleading for some force outside myself to
change my situation. However, as it happens with most of my music, when I look back on what I wrote and what I was dealing with, I understand how the first green light had to come from within me.

“Green Light” gives us permission to let go of old stories so we can be open to a fresh start. In my world, this meant reimagining what it could mean to be a mom and still working in music. I had some old beliefs I had to overcome about what was possible at my age, because as a woman I had bought into some of the falsehoods relating my worth with my youthfulness. Since becoming a mom later in life, I’ve since developed a
whole new appreciation for what this experience has awoken in me. I gave birth naturally in our living room, and I’ve never felt more powerful in my life. That moment was a portal within my own personal growth. I will never be the same.

After releasing 3 albums under the name “Sheena Grobb”, I couldn’t think of a better song with which to introduce “Sheena Legrand” to the world. Despite singing consistently since I was 4 yrs old, with some recent coaching, I was able to find a whole new quality in my voice. For me, it represents the possibility for transformation within each of us. Joining my partner and son as a "Legrand" felt right personally, but it also worked for where I was at professionally. I’m feeling the change, and it’s good! When it comes to dreaming big, I’d say the sky is the limit. There’s been a shift in my availability, but travelling as a family is something we’re very much open to, so all the sudden, the possibilities seem endless again. I love the spot I’m in!”

lyrics

Green Light

By Sheena Legrand and Jonny Kirouac

I’ve been speaking my mind
in old journals since 1995
Ever weak in deciding what
words are worth letting out
and which ones will stay mine

Garbage piles and made-up files
and no returning balls that we threw
Take this bin and hide it in
my secret burning desire ’til I light the fire
and you knew I would all this time
But so did I

Chorus:
Give me one green light
Come on let’s go
Turn turn for me
Train left long ago
What if it’s only sight we’ve been looking for
Green brings out your eyes when you realize
It’s time to let go

We’ve been clearing the dust piles
caught up in all our forgotten years
We’ve been hearing the fuss while the people
move from the station lost in fears
This train long gone was not for you
Look for something new

Chorus

Give me one green light
Come on let’s go
Turn turn for me
Train left long ago
What if it’s only sight we’ve been looking for
Open up your eyes, and realize (repeat)

What is meant for you won’t pass you by (Repeat)

Give me one green light
Give me one more try
Give me one green light

And you didn’t mean to hurt no one

Let it go

Open up your eyes and realize
